Supplies:

  1. Disposable or reusable dish gloves
  2. Sponge
  3. Bucket
  4. Paper towels or rag
  5. Spray Bottle
  6. Large tub for soaking enclosure furnishings
  7. Dish Soap
  8. Bleach cleaning solution (4oz bleach to one gallon of water)
  9. Optional Glass cleaner (homemade: 1 quart rubbing alcohol, 1/4 cup vinegar, few drops of liquid soap, in a gallon container, fill the remaining with water)

Deep cleaning an enclosure is a two step process

  1. The removal of all enclosure debris
  2. The disinfecting of the enclosure itself and all enclosure furnishings

To remove all the debris and clean the enclosure:

  1. First, begin by removing all substrate, debris, and furnishings by hand with a pair of gloves on. Set all enclosure furnishings off to the side after removing any visible debris from them.
  2. Once the tank is free of as much debris as possible, clean the tank using hot soapy water and a sponge. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat the process as needed until all that remains is clean glass.

To disinfect the tank and the tank furnishings:

  1. Before beginning, make sure you have rinsed the tank very thoroughly after part one. While working in a ventilated area and wearing gloves, spray your bleach solution using the spray bottle on all surfaces of your enclosure, let it stand for 20-30 minutes reapplying as necessary to keep all surfaces moist with cleaner.
  2. Rinse carefully and thoroughly using warm water. Any residue from your bleach cleaner can cause severe health problems for your pet. We recommend rinsing twice to be safe.
  3. Using the same bleach solution in step 1, fill a large enough tub to soak all your tank furnishings (including hide logs, water bowls, climbing structures, or anything else placed in the tank for your pet). Soak for 30 minutes. Rinse completely and thoroughly. If you are soaking a wood object, it may be best to let it soak in warm water to help clean it of any leftover cleaning solution.
  4. Leave the tank and furnishings to dry or towel dry with paper towels/rag.
  5. Optionally, you can finish by cleaning the tank with glass cleaner to remove any streaks.

All that’s left to do is place new substrate into your tank and replace the furnishings. Then you can put your reptile back in its clean enclosure.
